What is the truth behind the death of Subhas Chandra Bose

There have been numerous theories encompassing the death of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose from the plane crash in 1945 at Taihoku (known as Taipei today). The other theories articulate that he was tortured and killed in prison by English.

The very name of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose keeps on inspiring the nation even today. He dedicated his life to the battle of independence of India from British governance and actively led numerous campaigns and battles motivating the youth.

In August 1945, the death of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in a plane crash is announced by a Japanese News Agency. Mahatma Gandhi believed in the report of his death without taking any further action for inquiry and merely added that one should learn from how Netaji lived.

It has been over 70 years of Subhash Chandra Bose death, yet there is continues debate whether Netaji died in the plane crash or not. The increasing controversy forced the government to initiate two official inquiries to find out the reason to Netaji’s death and later appointing Justice M K Mukherjee to re-examine the findings of the report. How the plane crash hypothesis occurred?

The Indian Government had initiated three inquiry commissions – under Shahnawaz Khan (1956), Justice Khosla (1970) and Justice Mukherjee (2006) to investigate Subhas Chandra Bose death. The initial two commissions were consistent in their discoveries that Netaji had passed away in a plane crash on August 18, 1945.

They had constructed their results in light of the declarations of Colonel Habib-ur Rahman of the Indian National Army, a number of eyewitnesses, and the official Japanese government proclamation. As per Colonel Habib who had survived the doomed crash, Netaji had sustained several burn injuries which become the reason for his death later. This theory is approved by the Japanese government also.

On the contrary, the third request commission under Justice Mukherjee stated that the Subhas Chandra Bose plane crash theory has no solid grounds as there was no plane crash on August 18, 1945.

The Renkoji Temple perspective

Colonel Habib ur Rahman told in his declarations to both the commissions of inquiry that Netaji had passed on in the plane crash and was incinerated from there on at Taihoku under the supervision of the Japanese Army. The ashes were later taken to Tokyo and kept at the Renukoji sanctuary where they are lying in the state ever since.

Netaji’s family in conflict with the commission discoveries and government reaction

The plane crash theory was again supported by the Modi government in its recent RTI answer encompassing Subhas Chandra Bose death. The same theory was endorsed when the government had requested declassification of Netaji records. This answer was apparently excoriated by one of the family members of Netaji, Chandra Kumar Bose. A large number of Subhash Chandra Bose relatives do not believe in the plane crash theory and have requested the government to follow up this issue with nations like Russia.

The Gumnami Baba theory

Another major controversy believed by Subhash Chandra Bose followers is that he lived as an ascetic in Faizabad under a false identity after he was declared dead in the plane crash. This was additionally tested by inquiry commission set up by the Samajwadi party government under Justice (Retd) Vishnu Sahai following an order by the Allahabad High Court. The Justice in his report to the UP governor, H.E. Smash Naik had stated that ascetic was to be sure Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

The Russian perspective

Another theory about Subhas Chandra Bose demise is that he didn’t die in the plane crash and had rather disappeared to the former Soviet Union. The plane crash theory was intentionally coasted around by the Japanese to encourage Netaji’s escape. As indicated by General G.D. Bakshi, Netaji was possibly tortured to death in a Siberian gulag – either by the British interrogators or under the requests of Stalin.
