An eight-year-old girl, residing in a government-run orphanage for girls, inserted her fingers into a fellow seven-year-old girl’s vagina, reported the Hindustan Times.
The horrific episode unfolded in Madhya Pradesh’s Katni district.
The younger girl was taken to the district hospital when she started bleeding. Subsequently, police officials arrived to do a routine check on what initially seemed like a game gone wrong.
Little had they known that the mishap would lead them to a serious sexual offender.
“Bhaiyya ne bola ye sehat ke liye achcha hai (brother said this is good for health),” the eight-year-old girl told the police.
The police discovered that the eight-year-old had been sexually abused for approximately two months in her previous orphanage.
The girl, who was rescued by Child Line after she was found begging on trains, was initially admitted to an orphanage for children below the age of six.
Therefore, when her actual age was ascertained to be eight, she was moved to her current orphanage.
While the eight-year-old was at her first orphanage, she was sexually abused by the 30-year-old peon stationed there.
She calls the peon Bhaiyya. Taking advantage of the little girl’s innocence, Bhaiyya sexually abused her on the pretext of it ensuring good health.
It was this Bhaiyya’s teachings that the girl was practising with the seven-year-old, whom she ended up injuring.
“He used to sleep with me every day. Whenever I complained of pain, he used to tell me it is good for health,” she told the police.
Explaining the child’s behaviour, mental health expert Dr Samir Parikh, told HT, “A lot of time ragging continues in colleges because those who were ragged continue to rag. It is the same principle in this case.”
This case raises certain questions on the orphanage’s children’s caretaking abilities.
What caused them to turn a blind eye to the ongoing sexual abuse of a little girl within theirsafe premises?
Why did nobody in that orphanage raise concerns over the peon’s sleeping with the girl “every day”?
Does their job end at simply picking children up from dangerous places and put them inside the walls of their orphanage? What about paying heed to what happens to them within?
Here’s hoping the offender is brought to justice sooner rather than later.
